Google Talk: A New Form of Internet Chatting Popular Among Employees at Different Organizations
Anaheim, Calif., Sep. 16 – For the purpose of restricting the use of various kinds of Instant Messaging (IM) software applications, many different organizations have deployed a mechanism of some sort, being it the traditional method of Firewalls or the newly advanced technology of IDS/IPS, in order to properly restrict the transmission of those applications at the gateway front. By doing so, it does effectively deny most of the log-in process of programs such as MSN messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, etc. and as a result, employees in general will spend valuable time focusing on necessary tasks and being more productive instead of chit-chatting with friends during working hours.
Nevertheless, the ever evolving technology forked out by different IM companies have really given those IDS/IPS providers a tough time at combat with their revolutionizing ways of instant communication. After the official announcement of Google Talk at the end of August by the largest portal site of the world, Google™, members with original Gmail accounts have massively invited all of their friends and families, including colleagues, to join this “new & free” service provided by Google™. After receiving the invitation and registered as a Gmail member, people are able to communicate with each other freely again despite of restrictive mechanisms being deployed. Since the release of this new form of Instant Messaging is still fairly diminutive compared to its predecessors, traditional firewalls, and content-based inspection devices along with IDS/IPS providers have not yet able to come up with any signature policies to successfully eliminate the transmission of Google Talk!
BroadWeb Corp., based on its relentless effort at providing top-notched security solutions to its customers proudly announced three newly written signature policies specifically targeting at stopping the transmission of Google Talk at the 2nd of September. These three new signature policies allow the MIS staff to properly configure the status of Google Talk:
1. First level will deny the usage of Google Talk completely.
2. Second level will allow the user to log-on to the Google Talk server but unable to chat at all.
3. Third level allows user to log-on and chat but not able to use “voice-communications”.
All of the existing BroadWeb NetKeeper™ users are able to easily update the signature policies through the online update services at BroadWeb Crop’s website.
